For the Dumplings
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour base of the dumplings

  • 1/4 cup shortening can replace with butter
  • 1 large egg yolk adds richness
  • 1/2 cup milk add gradually

Method
 

Berry Sauce Preparation
  1. In a large pot, combine blackberries, sugar, and water. Add butter and cinnamon. Cook over medium-low heat for 20-30 minutes until thick.
Dumpling Dough Preparation
  1. In a bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Cut in shortening until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the egg yolk.
Incorporate Milk
  1. Gradually add milk to the flour mixture until dough holds together but is not sticky. Divide and shape into discs.
Roll Out Dough
  1. Roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 1 inch wide strips.
Cook Dumplings
  1. Drop pieces of dough into bubbling sauce. Avoid stirring and let it puff up.
Simmer to Cook Through
  1. Cover and simmer on medium for 15 minutes. Do not stir during cooking.
Let Sauce Thicken
  1. Remove from heat and let sit uncovered for 10 minutes.
Serve
