Berry Sauce Preparation
- In a large pot, combine blackberries, sugar, and water. Add butter and cinnamon. Cook over medium-low heat for 20-30 minutes until thick.
Dumpling Dough Preparation
- In a bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Cut in shortening until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the egg yolk.
Incorporate Milk
- Gradually add milk to the flour mixture until dough holds together but is not sticky. Divide and shape into discs.
Roll Out Dough
- Roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 1 inch wide strips.
Cook Dumplings
- Drop pieces of dough into bubbling sauce. Avoid stirring and let it puff up.
Simmer to Cook Through
- Cover and simmer on medium for 15 minutes. Do not stir during cooking.
Let Sauce Thicken
- Remove from heat and let sit uncovered for 10 minutes.
Serve
- Spoon warm dumplings with sauce into bowls. Optional: serve with ice cream or evaporated milk.
