Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with unsalted butter.
  2. In a mixing bowl, toss sliced sweet potatoes with cinnamon, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter, add flour to form a roux, then whisk in heavy cream until thickened. Stir in cranberries and brown sugar.
  4. Layer one-third of sweet potatoes in the baking dish, top with one-third of the creamy sauce, and repeat until all ingredients are used.
  5. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45-50 minutes, until sweet potatoes are tender.
  6. Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter, and optional nuts. Sprinkle over gratin, then bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes until topping is golden.
  7. Let the gratin rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.
